ACS Vocabulary: Course vs. Section?
On Acadeum Course Share (ACS), a course is identified by a unique Course Code/Course ID. If the course codes in your institution's Course Catalog should change, a new course must be added to ACS to represent the new Course Code.
A section is a specific offering or instance of a course. Multiple offerings of a Course Code means that a course will have multiple sections. Sometimes a section is called a "course section".
What roles can complete what updates?
A user's role and permissions determine whether they can add, edit, or remove courses and sections.
- Edit an Existing Course - Institution Administrators, Teaching Administrators, and Course Upload Administrators can edit courses that already exist on ACS. This includes information such as the syllabus, course description, learning assessment, faculty credentials, and other course details. See Course Information Available for Editing below.
- Add, Edit, or Remove an Existing Section - Similarly, Institution Administrators, Teaching Administrators, and Course Upload Administrators can edit sections that already exist on ACS. This includes manually adding a new section to an existing course, and also removing a section should it reach capacity or no longer be offered. Section information includes the specific course section dates, cost, schedule, and other section details.
- Add or Edit Courses via Manual or Bulk Upload - Only Course Upload Administrators can add new courses to ACS. If a course has never been offered on ACS, the Course Upload Administrator will need to add it manually or via bulk upload. Existing courses and sections can also be edited via bulk upload. Learn more about managing courses via bulk upload here.
