How to be Successful in an Online Course
Online learning has been thrust into the spotlight recently - for better or worse. However, there are specific things your students can do to set themselves up for success in an online course.
-
Use a dedicated workspace
If your student is constantly distracted by the tv, or their roommate, or their phone, it will be harder for them to get work done.
-
Set a schedule
If your student sets aside dedicated time to work on assignments, they're more likely to get them done than if they're trying to squeeze them in whenever they find free time - because probably the last thing they'll want to do in their free time is homework.
-
Find a study buddy
Having someone to ask questions, and study, collaborate, and even commiserate with will make the class more enjoyable, hold them accountable, and will make them more likely to succeed.
-
Remember what the goal is
When your student is in the thick of things, juggling homework, assignments, and other life commitments, it's easy to lose sight of the ultimate goal: completion of their degree. Encourage them to take a step back and remember the bigger picture.
-
Don't get burnt out
Your student won't be able to be successful if they're burnt out, low on sleep, and running on fumes. Encourage them to take breaks, get enough sleep, and ask for help when they need.
-
Allow room to make mistakes
If your student is new to online courses, they may not adapt right away. Encourage them to understand that they may make some mistakes at first, but that's fine if they're able to learn from their mistakes and make changes as they go.
-
Reward successes
Many students are motivated by external sources, so encourage them to make plans to reward themselves after completing an especially tough study session, getting a certain grade on an assignment, or achieving a particular grade in the course. Having something to look forward to is a great way to get through challenging moments.
